This workshop is designed for
photographers wanting to slow down and see more, to
shift their current perspectives, to "see the world
in a grain of sand."
Beginning with a short overview of the
Zone System, Kim will help students explore their personal
vision, unblock creative channels, and use photography
as a gauge for growth. Students will photograph the
local landscape -- looking at form, the interplay of
positive and negative space, layers of meaning, depth,
and of course, content.
The class will shoot at least twice daily
-- in the early morning and late afternoon when the
light emphasizes texture. Day one will include a review
of the instructor's portfolio. Student portfolios (not
required but suggested) will be reviewed on a rolling
basis throughout the week. From Tuesday through Friday
during our mid-day sessions, we will critique contact
sheets and work prints. There will be plenty of time
for one-on-one review sessions.
Throughout the week, we will also read
and discuss Art & Fear, a particularly thought-provoking
text (provided complimentary on the first day of the
course.)

This workshop is designed for
travelers (and professional travel writers) who want
to move beyond cliched snapshots. We will learn how
to see with fresh eyes and portray a "sense of
place."
The course will review film choice, aperture,
shutter speed, depth of field, and lens selection. Before
hitting the road (or beach), we'll develop a well-rounded
"shoot list" of images to search for that
also leaves room for serendipity. We'll learn the value
of editing wisely, and how to display and market our
images. By the end of the week students will have a
portfolio of strong, tight images that conveys their
vision.
The class will shoot in early morning
and late afternoon. Mid-day sessions will critique contact
sheets, work prints, and portfolios. There will be plenty
of time for one-on-one review sessions.
Travel Photography, A Guide to Taking
Better Pictures (published by Lonely Planet) will
be used throughout the week as a practical reference
guide (and provided complimentary on the first day of
the course.)
Kim will be available in the evenings
to continue lively conversations about the nature of
art versus commerce, how to develop and maintain a personal
vision in a commercial world -- or just to recommend
a great clam shack and gallery crawl.

Instructor Bio
Kim
Grant, a fine art and editorial photographer, travels
extensively and is represented by Lonely
Planet Images. Much of her personal Cape Cod work
is published under the imprint Bindu
Press. She has authored and photographed many travel
guides, among them Cape
Cod, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket: An Explorer's
Guide. Kim sees the process of photography
as an outer manifestation of inner consciousness and
her work as an accredited
T'ai Chi Chih teacher complements that.
